Why You Need an Insurance Assessor

Insurance Assessor, Loss Assessor, Claims Assessor. What’s the difference?

These are often interchangeable terms for a professional who will act on behalf of the public in dealing with Property Damage Insurance Claims. However this discription best fits Loss Assessors because in certain contexts Claims Assessor and Insurance Assessor can mean different things. I have outlined below some of the functions of all three and noted some of the contexts where they are different.

Insurance Assessor:

  • An Insurance Assessor normally refers to a person appointed by the policyholder to manage the claim on their behalf while this is always the case for a Loss Assessor. However, Loss Adjusters who act on behalf of the Insurance Company are also sometimes referred to as Insurance Assessors as indeed are Motor Assessors.
  • Insurance Assessors if acting on behalf of the policyholder will carry out the same functions as a Loss Assessor. However, for clarity it is imperative that on first contact you should clarify whether they propose to act on your  behalf or on behalf of the  insurance company.

As with Loss Assessors and Insurance Assessors when acting on behalf of the public will deal with the following types of claim:

  • Water damage Insurance Claim otherwise known as leaking pipe or escape of water claims.
  • Making a Fire Damage Insurance Claim.
  • Storm Damage Insurance Claim.
  • Burst Pipes Insurance Claim.
  • Smoke Damage Insurance Claim.
  • Impact Damage Claims.

Loss Assessor:

  • A Loss Assessor is always appointed by the policyholder to manage the claim on their behalf.
  • They normally work on behalf of the policyholder never on behalf of the insurance company.
  • Loss Assessors will deal with third party property claims on your behalf. For example, if your property suffers impact damage from a vehicle your loss Assessor will deal with the damage on your behalf. Handling communication with the third-party insurance company.
  • Your Loss Assessor will deal with all types of property damage claims, for example:

Claims Assessor:

  • A Claims Assessor is normally appointed by the policyholder to manage the claim on their behalf while this is always the case for a Loss Assessor.
  • Claims Assessors like normally work on behalf of the policyholder. However, in some contexts the term Claims Assessor can refer to somebody appointed by the Insurance Company. In the case of Motor Vehicle Claims the phrase Motor Assessor is used. It is better to clarify with the person involved at the outset.
  • However normally the phrase Claims Assessor is interchangeable with Loss Assessors and they will like Loss Assessors deal  with Third Party Property Claims or directly with your own insurance  Company if you are:
    • Making a water damage Insurance Claim.
    • Making a Fire Damage Insurance Claim.
    • Storm Damage Insurance Claim.
    • Burst Pipes Insurance Claim.
    • Smoke Damage Insurance Claim.
